After nearly 2 years, thousands of commits, and with the help of 1600 developers it is done. Today Rails 3.0 has been released. Rails 3.0 not only has plenty of new and useful features, it also has been rewritten from the ground and is the basis of all future development. “Convention over Configuration” is still the principle, but with the addition of modularity. Assemble your own Rails stack without any restrictions. Most of Rails functionality can be replaced with other components. No more hacking/monkey patching to use Mongrel, CouchDb, Datamapper, Redis, Haml or some other hot technology.

Thanks to all Rails committers and the awesome community (nearly all plugins are already Rails 3 compatible). Technology predictions tend to
be wrong, but I think in this case it is easy to say Rails 3 will be a huge success.

The revised schedule for the Ruby 1.9.2 release has been announced yesterday. A few weeks ago, Ruby 1.9.2 finally passed all RubySpec tests. The new schedule now looks as follows:

31 Mar. freeze the spec

30 Apr. freeze the code

31 May. release 1.9.2-preview2

30 Jun. release 1.9.2-rc

31 Jul. release 1.9.2-p0

The spec freeze that is due at the End of March will freeze the list of features that might get included in the release. These features then need to be implemented before the code is frozen at April 30, otherwise the feature will be excluded from the release. After that, another month is spent on stabilizing the release, eventually resulting in the preview2 release. If everything goes well the final release should be due in mid-August.

I made the full switch to NetBeans with version 6.1. Since then NetBeans is constantly getting better and more comfortable. The 6.7 release is more a quality release than a feature one. Of course, new features are in it, but many of them are subtle and just make using it more comfortable. The last 1,5 month I am using NetBeans 6.7 developer builds and it feels just good (especially on the Mac).

I really hope that the Oracle/Sun deal doesn’t affect NetBeans in a bad way (maybe in a good way? I am an optimist). I plan to do a full and lengthy coverage of NetBeans 6.7 when a release candidate is here..

Here are the Release Notes of the Beta (full 6.7 here):

Maven support for the creation of plugins and web services as well as support for POM and J2EE

Kenai integration enables the creation and editing of Kenai projects from within the IDE

PHP improvements include Selenium support and SQL code completion

C++ support for Qt library, remote development and code refactoring

The final SDK 1.5 has just been released for Android. I am really excited about this new release and I look forward to the next Android project.

Here is a-not-complete-1.5-feature-list take from the release notes:

Multiple versions of the Android platform are included (Android 1.1, Android 1.5). The tools are updated to let you deploy your application on any platform in the SDK, which helps you ensure forward-compitility and, if applicable, backward-compatibility.

Introduces Android Virtual Devices — (AVD) configurations of options that you run in the emulator to better model actual devices. Each AVD gets its own dedicated storage area, making it much easier to work with multiple emulators that are running concurrently.

Support for SDK add-ons, which extend the Android SDK to give you access to one or more external Android libraries and/or a customized (but compliant) system image that can run in the emulator.

The new Eclipse ADT plugin (version 0.9.0) offers new Wizards to let you create projects targetted for specific Android configurations, generate XML resources (such as layouts, animations, and menus), generate alternate layouts, and export and sign your application for publishing.

Improved JUnit support in ADT

Easier profiling of performance

Easier management of localized applications. You can now include or exclude locale resources when building your APK from a single Android project.

A new tool called “android” replaces the activitycreator script.
